Construction of a Water System in San Antonio, Cortes, Honduras

Friends of Honduras USA is working with San Antonio mayor, Amner Medosa to install a filter and treatment system that will provide drinking water for the people of San Antonio. Construction has begun on a 12,000 gallon water tank that will have enough reserve to provide water 24 hours a day. From this, tubes will be run to different parts of town and have six locations for families to fill their bottles with clean drinking water. Additional tubes would run drinking water to the school in town, which serves 1100 students. The cost of constructing the tanks and installing pumps, filters, and distribution lines around town is estimated to cost $10,000.

Below you see San Antonio school children drinking water from a rain barrel. It is far from sanitary, but is their only source of drinking water.

Currently water comes through pipes 5 miles down the mountain into a tank in San Antonio. This water from the town water system is unsuitable for drinking, and because the tank is not large enough to accommodate the needs of town's population of 10,000, it is depleted by 10 a.m. each morning.
